Bio Leaf PERLITE Super Chunky - 2 litres
Perlite adds aeration and drainage, reducing the risk of root rot. Popular used by itself forĀ hydroponics and semi-hydro or mixed with other substrates toĀ create your own custom blend. A superb propagation substrate (just add fertiliser). Also popular mixed 50/50 with Stratum (aqua-soil), for alocasia corms and hard-to-root cuttings.
Available in two grades from Bio Leaf: Coarse (available here) or Chunky / Super Coarse (that's this size). I also have Egmont Perlite available which is the standard fine to medium perlite size.
PS: Need LOTS of potting mix? OrdersĀ over 15 litres total sometimes get too big or heavy for standard shipping rates. If your order goes over into overweight / oversize rates I will be in touch to let you know. I won't incur any costs without your okay - Anna :)Ā

Bag size and perlite sizeĀ Ā
Bio Leaf Super Chunky Perlite is a the largest size (if you're wanting standard size fine to medium perlite go for theĀ Egmont Perlite instead). This is more a coarse to chunky size, aroundĀ 6mm to 1cm long by aboutĀ 3mm to 8mm thick on average. Being a natural product you'll get a variety of sizes in the bag.
The bag holdsĀ 2 litres. That's a bag roughly 18cm across x 25cms tall and about 5cm wide but that can't be exact because litres is measured by volume not weight, so just a guide to help you visualise how big the bag is. 2 litres of perlite would fill around an empty 15cm to 17cm wide pot if filled only with perlite (in real life it'll usually fill more of course as the plant roots take up a fair bit of room in a pot, plus you don't fill pots with substrate right to the rim).
How much water does perlite hold?
How big the perlite is changes how much water it holds and how well it drains.
When perlite is used by itself:Ā
EXTRA-FINE perlite drains slower and increases water holding capacity to about 60%+
FINE perlite has normal slow'ish drainage and around a 40%+ water holding capacity.
MEDIUM perlite offer faster drainage and lower water holding, around 30%+
COARSE to CHUNKY is very fast to drain and has the lowest water holding capacity, around 20%+
Egmont Perlite is aroundĀ fine to medium in size, which would be considered the standard size of perlite. Bio Leaf Coarse Perlite (available here), is around medium to coarse. Bio Leaf Chunky Perlite (that's this size you're on now), is up at the coarse to chunky range.
